Artist Statement

The symbols and subject matter in my work deal with a perspective on life that claims there is a bigger picture, a greater cause to which we can compare our troubles and hopes.  Nature is one of my main subjects for symbolism because it is familiar and inspiring.  I enjoy symbols for their story-like qualities and their potential for communicating inter-culturally.  For instance, a boat commonly represents going on a journey; mountains are known as high or holy places; roosters are the heralds of a new day.  I also include Biblical symbolism such as sheep; Christ being the good shepherd, and sheep, his followers.

This particular body of work is unique in that each one has been painted with the immediacy of carrying on a conversation.  While painting, I converse with Yahweh, the Christian God and the finished painting, as well as the process, is what I hear from him.  The majority of paintings here were done at worship events in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings.

The gesture style and water markings of my work are evidences of the human hand and nature’s influence in the process.  I appreciate the imperfect beauty of an organic kind as it causes my thoughts to be raised beyond the strength and ingenuity of humankind.  It is much more exciting to see what happens on the canvas as opposed to preplanning every inch of the image.

My influences throughout art history include the simple, concise work of Japanese ink and brush paintings along side Marc Chagall’s chimerical use of characters and colors.  I am encouraged by such artists as Chagall and California water colorist, Rollin Pickford, as they exemplify painting with loyal affection for their subjects, while aptly communicating by way of confident colors and simplified, expressive forms.
